Amy Mihaljevic: Part One

Today we discuss the tragic abduction and murder of 10 year old Amy Mihaljevic. Amy was a 10 year old girl from Bay Village, Ohio who was abducted from a shopping plaza on October 27th, 1989. 
 
The FBI is offering a reward up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the death of Amy Renee Mihaljevic. Anyone with information concerning the murder of Amy Mihaljevic should contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI. You may also contact your local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.

MMIW: Fred Martinez

Today we discuss the tragic case of Fred Martinez. Fred was a 16 year old Native American Navajo teenager who was brutally murdered in June 2001. His life and his murder have become an important touchpoint in the conversation surrounding violence against LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit individuals, particularly within Indigenous communities.

Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women

The epidemic of missing & murdered Indigenous women (MMIW) in the United States is a severe and urgent crisis that has gone largely ignored for centuries. While Indigenous women and girls make up just 2% of the U.S. population, they make up 20% of all missing person’s cases nationwide.
This episode provides a brief summary of the history of MMIW and the legacy of colonization, racial discrimination, and jurisdiction issues between federal, state, and tribal governments. We also cover the lack of national data collection on MMIW cases which makes it difficult to grasp the full scale of the epidemic.
